What are the types of membrane switches?

2022-04-25

There are two types of membrane switches, flexible membrane switches and rigid membrane switches

1. Flexible membrane switch
Flexible membrane switches are a typical form of membrane switches. The reason why this type of membrane switch is called
flexible is because the panel layer, isolation layer and circuit layer of the membrane switch are all composed of software
films of various properties.
The circuit layer of the flexible membrane switch adopts polyester film (PET or FPC) with good electrical performance as the
carrier of the switch circuit pattern. This layer is also divided into metal domes and upper and lower circuits. Due to the
influence of the properties of polyester film, the membrane switch has good insulation, heat resistance, bending resistance and
high resilience. The graphic superposition of the switch circuit, including the connection of the switch and its lead wires, is
printed with low-resistance, low-temperature-cured conductive paint. Therefore, the composition of the entire membrane switch
has a certain flexibility, which is not only suitable for use on a flat body, but also has a good cooperation with a curved body. The lead wire of the flexible membrane switch is integrated with the switch body itself. When making the connection of the membrane switch, it is collected at a certain place on the membrane, and extends outwards according to the position
specified by the design and the standard conductive wire spacing, as a flexible membrane switch. The lead-out conductive wire
that can be bent arbitrarily and sealed is connected with the rear circuit of the whole machine.

2. Rigid membrane switch
Rigid membrane switch means that the graphics and circuits of the switch are made on a common printed circuit copper clad
laminate. The characteristics of rigid membrane switch are convenient material, stable process, low resistance, and some
components in the circuit can be directly welded on the back. In the case of small area, the hard backing layer can be omitted.
Rigid membrane switches generally use metal guides as circuit conduction contacts, so they have a better tactile feel. The
disadvantage is that the connection in the assembly machine is not as convenient as that of the flexible membrane switch, and
it is often necessary to weld the components and lead out the leads through the flat cable. In addition to the buzzer signal
and LED indication, the information feedback of the rigid membrane switch usually adopts a metal dome.
