Membrane Switch Design Guide

A membrane switch is a special type of custom switch part used to open or close a conductive path in an electrical circuit. Each layer in a part has its own unique purpose and can add custom features.

Membrane switches generally come in three designs

1, graphic overlay design

In the construction of a membrane switch keypad, the graphic overlay is the top layer. Graphic overlays can be made from a variety of different materials, including polyester PET, polycarbonate PC, and more. Various types of adhesives are also used to secure the graphic overlay to the circuit layer. membrane panel do not have any live circuits or wires. They are semi-finished products assembled using polyester or polycarbonate and adhesives.

2, circuit layer and its function design

Typically, the circuit layer of a membrane switch is made of materials polyester (PET) or copper (FPC). Screen printed silver conductors and carbon conductors are used as conductive components on circuits. If you need a more reliable solution, you can also use the FPC circuit to use etched copper as the circuit material. The circuit layer can house components such as LED capacitors and/or resistors to make the membrane switch work as desired for the device. The circuit layer also enables any buttons, keypads, and other input tools to function properly in a membrane switch keyboard.

3, Connector design

There are many kinds of connectors, and two are the most commonly used, one is a female connector with PIN pins, and the other is ZIF, and the ZIF connector is an option for circuit connection of the membrane switch with its mother board. This is one of the cheapest ways. These connectors are made by printing conductive silver or etching copper and then pressing these materials together, similar to the process used for flex circuits. The number of pins on a ZIF connector is directly related to the number of switches required for circuit operation. Each pin is noted on the associated electrical schematic.
